ISO 11540: 2014 Writing and marking instruments – Specification testing of pen caps
ISO 11540 standard test to prevent children from choking on pen caps: Children often have the habit of sucking their fingers. After entering school, pen caps naturally become finger substitutes, which is obviously very dangerous.
Children can suffocate if they suck on the cap of a pen that is sized and shaped to facilitate sucking or swallowing. The consequences are potentially fatal. This is a danger that cannot be ignored for school-age children in lower grades.
ISO 11540: 2014 specifies requirements for reducing the risk of suffocation with caps for writing and marking instruments.
It relates to such tools that are likely to be used by children under 14 years of age under normal or foreseeable circumstances .
ISO 11540: 2014 does not apply to the following situations: writing and marking instruments designed or intended for adult use only ( such as jewelry pens, precious fountain pens, professional and technical pens, etc. ) .
