1.ST2002 Overview
The Japanese Toy Safety Mark (ST MARK) is managed and issued by the Japan Toy Association, and stipulates the mechanical and physical properties, combustion safety performance and chemical safety performance of toys.

S stands for safety and T stands for toys. This standard is voluntary. Only products that comply with this standard are allowed to bear the ST mark on the product itself. Although it is not a mandatory standard, this standard has a very important impact on the acceptance of toys in the Japanese market. Japanese toy standards were . The 2001 revised version refers to and incorporates the requirements of international standards such as ISO and Japan's Food Hygiene Law.


2. Scope of application of ST 2002:
Japanese toy standard (ST2002) applies to children’s toys aged 14 years and under, including requirements for children’s toys under 18 months of age,

Requirements for toys for children under 3 years old and toys for children under 10 years old.

Mainly include:

science equipment
, children's crafts (for example: easy-to-build models, woodworking tools)
garden toys (for example: swing toys,

3. If ST2002 testing items
want to obtain the ST mark, they must comply with Japanese toy safety standards. The standard can be divided into the following 3 parts:
Part 1 – Physical and Mechanical Testing: Concerned about the hazards of toys to children
Part 2 – Flammability Test: Concerned about the flammability properties of toys
Part 3 – Chemistry Nature: Pay attention to the toxicity of different toy materials (especially PVC, PE, rubber, paint coatings and textile materials)


4. Update of ST2002-ST2012
In October 2012, Japan promulgated the new toy safety standard ST2012, which will be implemented on January 3, 2013. The previous version, ST 2002 (11th edition), is still valid until March 31, 2014. During this transition period, the Japan Toy Association (JTA) also accepts ST 2002 (11th edition) or ST 2012 as the standard for the ST certification mark.

In the new standard, certain physical and mechanical requirements are modified to be consistent with ISO 8124 Part 1 and EN71 Part 1; the requirements for combustion testing are equivalent to ISO 8124

Part 2; while the chemical properties of Part 3 maintain the requirements of ST 2002 (11th edition) without revision.
