Certification introduction
Saudi energy efficiency certification is a mandatory certification controlled by the Saudi Standards Office (SASO). As the only national standards agency in Saudi Arabia, SASO is fully responsible for the formulation and implementation of all standards and measures.
In March 2009, SASO announced in the official national gazette the implementation of energy efficiency labels (EER) and maximum energy performance requirements (MEPS) for three categories of products: air conditioners, washing machines, refrigerators and freezers. The regulations will be effective from April 27, 2010. , all products within the scope of control must pass energy efficiency tests, meet the requirements of MEPS, complete Saudi energy efficiency registration and affix energy efficiency labels (as shown on the left) before they can be cleared and sold in the Saudi market.
The certificate is valid for one year and must be renewed one month before the certificate expires.
Standard updates:
1. Air conditioning
According to Article 5 of the SASO 2663/2012 standard; the MEPS value requirements will be enforced in the second phase of improvement from January 22, 2015 (as shown below):
Air conditioning equipment type | Cooling Capacity Limit (CC) (Btu/h) | (EER) value (Btu/h)/watt will be mandatory starting from September 7, 2013 | (EER) value (Btu/h)/watt will be mandatory from January 22, 2015 |
Test conditions (T1) | T1 | T3 | T1 | T3 |
window type | 18000 > CC | 8.5 | 6.12 | 9.8 | 7.06 |
18000 CC < 24000 | 8.5 | 6.12 | 9.7 | 6.98 |
CC 24000 | 8.5 | 6.12 | 8.5 | 6.12 |
Split type and others | All abilities | 9.5 | 6.84 | 11.5 | 8.28 |
2. Refrigerator
New energy efficiency standard for household refrigerators SASO 2664:2013 Enforcement date: 2014-10-01
New standard implementation timetable:
-- Starting from August 1, 2014, SASO will no longer accept applications for energy efficiency certificates under the old standards.
-- Starting from January 1, 2015, Saudi Customs will prohibit refrigerators that do not meet the new standards from entering the Saudi market.
-- Starting from March 1, 2015, refrigerators that do not meet the new standards will be prohibited from being sold in the Saudi market.
-- Refrigerators that already hold a valid Saudi energy efficiency certificate but do not meet the new standards will be allowed to use labels on the market until February 28, 2015.
-- Refrigerators that already hold a valid Saudi energy efficiency certificate and meet the new standards are allowed to continue to use the label until the certificate expires.
